On my current playthrough, I'd refuse to build the Cyclops at all if it were possible. That base turned out to be a major stepping stone on my way down, and actually ended up becoming my second biggest base. My first major outpost was just outside the entrance to the Lost River Laboratory Cache, using the entrance with the Third Degasi Seabase as my access point. Had a heck of a time figuring out how to get back out, but that's what the Jump Jet upgrade and Grappling Hook were for.

I even used the PRAWN to explore the Jellyshroom Cave. Once that was done, I found that my Seamoth was perfect for primary transportation, and my PRAWN, equipped with the Grappling Hook and Drill Arm served to take care of anything below 900m. Instead, I made a network of Moonpool-based outposts to dock my Seamoth and PRAWN, using Oculus fish in Bioreactors as my primary power source in most bases, with the sole exception being my outpost near the PCF, which was powered by thermal plants.

On my first playthrough, I crafted my Cyclops as soon as I could, thinking it might be a useful thing to have. All the interesting exploration areas are 900m and shallower ! Past that point, you're likely just focusing on doing the final pieces of the story. All just wide open lava expanses and a single color palette. The Cyclops is super cool, but definitely favors more overworld open areas such as>! The Dunes, Crag Fields, !! the Lost River in the northern part of the map by the Bulb Zone!! there's not much more excitement past 900m anyways. You can easily traverse the map in Prawn mode with those portals. But after one powers on the Alien Arch portal network, I just park it next to my main base to look pretty. I find it's best use is a smoother delivery of your Prawn to and from the deepest depths.
